This is a markedly non-beauty related post. But I felt compelled to post it regardless.

We did not win our first-ever gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics tonight. But I am so deeply heartened and humbled by the outpouring of love, support, encouragement and enthusiasm thrown behind Lee Chong Wei from Malaysians both at home and abroad.

I hope he realises that he brought us together in two specific ways: one, in that harried, binding, slightly manic, panicked, frenzied way that only sport can and does – and two, in a passionate heart-and-soul, We Are Malaysian way that doesn’t often manifest itself anymore.

Thank you, Lee Chong Wei. You have done more for your country and your countrymen tonight than you realise.

  1. I agree 100% with you! It breaks my heart to see the tears in his eyes when he was on the podium. A silver Olympic medal is still an AMAZING achievement… we are SO PROUD OF YOU Datuk Lee! 🙂

    • As a nation, we wept with him. We can only console ourselves that he played a much better game compared to the Beijing Olympics and that he really gave it his all despite his injuries this year.

    • Thanks Jenn! It really could have been anyone’s game, especially in the final minutes. He did great and has nothing to apologise for.

  2. i love this post! Q.Q it was such a depressing night after he lost… the whole of my family was speechless..
and it was such a pain to see his sad face… it made my heart ache…
It was such an amazingly high performance game!
You made us proud! Lee Chong Wei!
You tied all malaysians together like no one did before!

    • Thanks Gin. Seeing his heartache was tough, but it was proof (not like we needed it by that point) that he’d poured his entire being into the effort. I think that is the hallmark of a true sportsman.
